Australian Red Cedar Yarn Bowl

189.00

Yarn bowls are a great help to keep your balls of wool from rolling away or just out of reach of curious pets or kids while you knit or crochet the hours away, they are not only handy but should also be as beautiful and crafted with the same love that you are putting into your craft.

This hand crafted yarn bowl turned in Australian Red Cedar. It was turned in my workshop in Heathmont, a leafy suburb of outer Melbourne and sanded and polished to a fine finish, the yarn slot is then cut by hand and sanded to allow the smooth feed out of your yarn.

Red Cedar (Toona ciliata), a large deciduous rainforest tree distributed from the south coast of NSW into Queensland, yields a red, soft but durable timber that is one of the most prized of Australian timbers. Red Cedar, known as red gold by early settlers, drove the expansion up and down the coast of the NSW settlement and is the stunning timber so much colonial furniture is crafted from. This exploitation in the early years of the colony has lead to it's limited availability.

This bowl measures 18 cm x 9 cm (7" x 3.5") giving it a bigger capacity for larger 200g balls of wool.
